Chapter 1: Defining Psychology – Introduction to Psychology and Research Methods

and read the first section “What is Psychology” – be familiar with these concepts and ideas. READ and think – I know…that’s hard…you do not know exactly how. It is not fun. 1. I hadn’t put much thought into what psychologists do to try and enforce positivity.
2. What surprised me was how common the usage of psychology is. Any action we make is what psychologists observe and use in their studies.
3. I’m very open minded to new topics and how they affect the people who learn them.

1. I learned that psychology has five basic goals: describe, explain, predict, control, and improve.
2.I had an idea before, but I never knew that we basically use the principles of psychology in just about everything we do in our daily lives.

1. I learned about industrial psychologist. I have a strong interest in business and did not know that this position was even an opportunity for others to partake.
2 I was surprised at all of the accomplishments of Wilhelm Wundt. With his numerous books along with lab studies, he did major works for observations on people.
3. I read many books per month. My strengths of personal expirences along with literary expirneces will allow me to give in-depth insight on a topic.

I learned that psychology has many different sub-categories and is a very broad field. I was surprised to learn about all the different professions within psychology, from research psychology to clinical and business psychology. The strengths I bring to this class are my passion for discussion and my determination to learn.

1) I learned that psychology helps to predict actions as well as analyse them.
2) I was surprised to find that psychologists treat people in groups to ease their anxiety. For me, the more people that are around, the higher my anxiety.

1: One thing I learned was that some of the false information given out by people with strong opinions is called popular psychology.

I was unaware that psychology could not only be used as a means to predict behavior but also control it. I was surprised to see that psychology only has five primary goals that are easily comprehended. My desire to relate concepts learned to the real world is my biggest strength.

1. I learned that Wilhelm Wundt is actually the father of psychology when many people believe it is Sigmund Freud.
2. I was surprised to find out Wundt released the first psychology textbook.
3. I enjoy learning about how the brain works so I will be very engaged.

One thing I learned: When we talk to ourselves in our heads, telling ourselves to “calm down,” “work harder,” or “give up,” we are utilizing cognitive approaches to change our behaviors and emotions.
One thing I was surprised by: The five study goals of psychology.
Strength I will bring to the class: I will bring a hard worker, that has many questions about psychology.

1.) One thing I learned from researching is that “Structuralism is the analysis of the basic elements that constitute the mind.”

I wasn’t actually aware of the five primary goals of psychology. One thing that surprised me was among the list of reasons for conduction society; I never thought about the fact that abusive fathers can translate into abusive spouses for their children. As a learner the strength which I can use to contribute to the class environment is my curiosity. I would very much like to know more about the relation between psychology and neuroscience; I am also interested in the psychological theories of Carl Jung.
